Synopsis:

Unchanged by time’s relentless march, Lily encounters early humans, forges a poignant friendship with another time-traveler, and experiences the raw beauty and brutality of Earth’s evolution. As she moves through history, Lily’s eternal life is marked by the joys and sorrows of existence: from the colonization of continents to the ravages of war, and the eventual return to a life that seems all too familiar yet forever changed.

As the Earth evolves and faces the brink of desolation, Lily finds solace in the companionship of another immortal. Their bond becomes a beacon of hope in an increasingly desolate world, and together they face the ultimate test of time.

Vaianaut is a story of unending life amid the transient moments of history, a profound exploration of what it means to be truly immortal. It is an exploration of what it means to live forever, to love beyond time, and a haunting reflection on the solitude immortality can bring.

Review:

After the meteorite hit the earth, Lily wakes up thousands of years later, only to find out that everything around her has changed. Welcome to the Ice Age 🙂 After so many years of accepting her fate and surroundings, she now has to get used to a completely new environment. She meets humans, and one of them knows her from the future.
This is only the beginning of a story that comes with a lot more questions—questions I need answers to, please.

While the first instalment mainly focused on topics of loneliness, what it means to find connections, and coming to terms with situations, the second book brings more of the sci‑fi elements to the forefront. It took me a while to mentally switch over to this, but once I was on board, I felt so drawn to the story. The pace picked up while so much was happening. Lily got closer to her old life, even though the road back to it was not an easy one. Suddenly interacting with others again felt necessary, but also suffocating at the same time. She constantly battles with finding connection while also accepting that being immortal (whatever these people did to her) means losing people over and over again. Also to see how nature will always fight back and that humans can be a lot more cruel than wild animals.

After the first book, I was eager to continue the journey, and it did not disappoint. I can’t exactly point out everything, but I enjoyed this one so much. It felt very different from the first one while staying true to itself. And after that cliffhanger ending, I cannot wait to find out how the story concludes.
