Synopsis:
“I was not created to back down”
The Descendants of Hyrax, God of the Dead, had long ago died out – that is, until Theadora Moore showed up on the steps of the Athenian Palace without any memories of her past life. She does, however, have magic in her veins and a mark on her chest that brands her the last living Descendant of Hyrax.
Desperate to use her to ensure peace in his kingdom, Prince Clayton Vail forces her to play a role she doesn’t want at court. When mysterious attacks start happening at the castle, though, it becomes clear that not everyone is happy with the return of House Hyrax.
If Thea wants to stay alive long enough to uncover the secrets of her past, she’s going to need to master her powers, navigate complicated politics, and figure out who to trust. In a castle filled with the children of the Gods… that might be easier said than done.

Review:
Thea wakes up imprisoned after losing control of her powers and killing someone. She doesn’t know who she is, where she came from, or how to fully use her magic, and all of this weighs heavily on her. Many people don’t trust her, and she soon realises she’s being used by the king as a pawn for his own plans.
The story starts strong, and I immediately felt Thea’s confusion and frustration. She feels alone and is desperate to understand her past, which marks the beginning of her journey to find her place and learn who she can trust. I admired how she accepts the responsibility placed on her while still trying to stay true to herself and keep learning and adapting.
The worldbuilding is revealed slowly, in small pieces, which worked well overall. While I didn’t fully understand every detail, I grasped most of it and its meaning quickly. The romance was also handled well – the connections between Thea and Clay felt natural, and both characters had to accept the reality of their situation.
I enjoyed this book a lot. The main characters were introduced clearly, the twists were well done, and what stood out most to me was Thea’s constant struggle between accepting her role and staying true to who she is.
