Synopsis:
Kest Wynn has two rules: keep her head down, and keep her sister breathing.
As a human slave in a Mountain Troll labor camp, Kest survives on forgeries, stolen coins, and careful math. Every breath is calculated. Every forged ledger line is a gamble. And the crystal gem fused to her wrist, the mark of the Attuned, is wrapped so tight she can barely feel her own pulse.
Then the warlord Korrak imports a chained elven prisoner, and everything Kest has carefully built begins to unravel.
The elf knows what she is. And he’s not the only one.
With the Sundering Rite closing in, a ceremony that will put Kest’s power on display and break everything she’s been hiding, she has days to forge a plan, file a key, and get her sister out alive. But escaping a troll warlord’s stronghold means trusting an elf with secrets of his own, relying on allies who may not survive the morning, and using the very power she’s spent years concealing.
One wrong move and the brand goes on. One wrong night and Mara pays for it.

Review:
We live in a world where humans are oppressed. Their status is tied to their ability to wield magic through gems fused to their wrists. An intact crystal is rare, and only those whose gem remains unbroken can access their power.
Kest works as a scribe in a camp ruled by trolls. She does what she must to survive, all while trying to protect her younger sister and holding onto the hope that one day they can escape to something better. Being caught in the middle of tense situations does nothing to improve how others treat her, and the constant pressure weighs heavily on her. When a prisoner unexpectedly offers a chance to change her circumstances, that possibility becomes her driving focus, pushing her toward a shared goal that could alter everything.
If you enjoy stories that take their time—letting you settle into the characters, the magic system, and the world-building- this book will likely work well for you. Much of the plot feels like groundwork being laid for what comes next. But if you prefer fast-paced storytelling, this may not be the right fit.
I appreciated the slower pace; it never felt dull, and the steady build-up added tension as everything moved toward one central turning point. If you’re looking for something easy to read, not overly complex but still engaging, this is a solid choice.
