Review Behind the Iron Gate by Allison Carr Waechter

This book can be read on its own, but I really recommend starting with the main series. Many characters and events are linked, and knowing them makes the story more enjoyable.

Synopsis:

When three are slain behind the iron gate, look for the signs of the sea.

Viviana Krane fled Nuva Troi to escape the weight of her family’s fame and the grief of losing her beloved sister. She returns quietly, in social disgrace, determined to finish graduate school and avoid the city’s hungry gaze. But the rival factions in Nuva Troi never sleep, and a relentless sense that she has forgotten something essential stalks her.

Casimir Sanvier, a ruthless vampire prince, arrives in Nuva Troi with a singular ambition: seize the House of Remiel’s throne. Viviana should be nothing more than a forbidden distraction. Yet, when the witch and vampire witness a murder on campus, they are forced together. Framed for murder, the two must uncover the truth before the city devours them both.

Review:

Vivi has lost her sister, and years later she is still grieving. She doesn’t remember everything that happened back then, which makes things even harder. When she meets Cas, the Prince of another order, she feels drawn to him-but her family strongly wants her to stay away. Since they live close to each other and share a mutual friend, avoiding one another isn’t easy, especially as their connection grows.

The story takes place a few years after the main series. I hoped people had learned from past mistakes, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. There is still a lot of distrust, and the different orders often work against each other instead of together. When murders begin and Vivi and Cas realise something bigger is happening, they get pulled into more danger than they expected. At this point, family bonds and working together become very important.
I really enjoyed seeing both familiar and new characters come together, and knowing them from earlier books made this even better for me. I actually liked this book more than the previous ones. The focus was more on the story and mystery, with the romance taking a step back but still being part of it. This gave all the characters more room to shine and made the book even more enjoyable.
