Synopsis:

Review:

The world-building and magic system are not overly complex and easy to understand. Magic is powered by pleasure and pain, and we have two main opposing sides.

Saffron’s parents were murdered by the Bloodmoons when she was a child, and her mission in life is to get revenge. She lied to gain entry to the Silvercloak Academy and become one of them. When she is exposed, she is offered the chance to go undercover and bring the Bloodmoons down. It is a very dangerous mission, but it aligns with her goal.

It became clear to me very early on that her mission would not be an easy one when the initial plan to get the Bloodmoons interested in her did not work out as intended. And things only got worse from there. Meeting Levan not only forces her to confront an enemy who makes her question things she thought she knew, but also introduces her to someone who seems to be just as broken as she is. These two characters and the way they interacted with each other were my favourite part of the book.
Nothing was as it seemed, and it already foreshadows that, if push comes to shove, they will make unplanned decisions that put themselves in danger.

I was drawn into the story immediately and could not put it down. Did I get the most complex story ever? No, but it gave me a couple to root for and a story that connected them in a unique way, with the stakes continuing to rise as the plot progressed.
