Review A Den of Howls & Discontent by Alex Frost
Synopsis:

A BARGAIN I NEVER CHOSE. A FATE I NEVER WANTED. A PACK I’LL NEVER ACCEPT.

I fought against my destiny for as long as I could. But to protect my friends and keep war from breaking out, I had to join the notoriously cruel and vicious Alpha Pack.

Politics forced us to be together, but that doesn’t make us a pack. I don’t like them, and they don’t trust me. Cade and Bastian tolerate my presence, but there is a cold distance between us. Warrick is actively plotting my death. And Ryker… he wants to own me.

I will not be owned.

What I need is a way out. A way to bargain for my fate. And to do that, I need something valuable to offer. The wraiths that serve the Seelie King are searching for something in the mountains. The Alphas are hunting for it too.

I’m going to find it first.

Review:

Having read the previous three books in the series, which follow Samara’s journey, I was really looking forward to Rynn’s story – and it got me hooked immediately.

Rynn’s position among the Alphas was never something she truly chose, and that much was clear from the start. What I appreciated here was how the story dug deeper into that situation, offering a more complete picture of just how complicated and unfair it is. It made it easy to root for her right away and hope she would eventually find a way out. She tries to accept her circumstances and make the best of them, yet she is constantly made to feel unwelcome and never fully accepted. Watching her endure that for over a year was genuinely heartbreaking.

Seeing her so isolated – cut off from the people who cared for her and supported her – was especially painful and came across so well to me. It only made me want her to escape even more. There is one brief interaction between Rynn and Selena that nearly brought me to tears. It marks the beginning of a connection between them, showing two women quietly looking out for each other. That moment felt like a small but important spark of hope.

I didn’t think the series could improve further, but this beginning of Rynn’s arc might be my favourite yet. It delivered everything I was hoping for, and more. I’m already very much looking forward to the next book.
