Review: Viking by Brilee Scott

Review:

I did not expect to fall in love with this book, the story, and its characters as much as I did. A few pages in, I immediately knew I had a winner in my hands, and I came close to reading it in one go – but someone needs their sleep 🙂
When Lila and Logan meet, it was very obvious to me that this was the start of something special. The banter and the chemistry came across so well on the page that it had me giggling internally for them. That’s how you write the beginning of a romance. I was completely convinced and wanted to see more of them.
Learning that they only had this one night together was heartbreaking, but it set the stage for them meeting again. And I was so happy about that 🙂 Years later, they both immediately picked up on their connection still being as strong as it was initially, despite not being able to get each other out of their minds in the meantime.

But it couldn’t be that easy, right? The story reflects very well how hard being in a relationship can be when you are in the military. Not knowing when your partner is leaving, where they are going, how long they’ll be gone, and when – or if – they’ll come back must be heartbreaking. And doing it all over again and again is torture for everyone involved. Knowing that you might lose someone, or that someone from your team might not make it back home, only adds to that burden. Including that aspect in the story made it feel so much more real and raised the stakes significantly.
If you know the risks and the potential outcome, is it better not to fall in love and spare those left behind the pain, or is taking the risk and giving love a chance the better option? That moral dilemma was portrayed very well, and I found myself a bit teary-eyed here and there.
