Review: Beneath the Buried Sea by Victoria Mier

Review:

The search for Raegan’s father continues, and in getting closer to the truth, she is putting herself more and more in danger. Learning that she is connected to the magical and human worlds being divided is an important part of the overall story, and I wish we had spent a little more time on the implications for everyone who lost their people. This was such an important event that I wanted to understand more about how it influenced those on the human side and how the remaining magical community adjusted to the new normal. We got some glimpses here and there, but I simply wanted more.

What I did enjoy, though, was some of the bonds the characters formed, and especially how some of the past mythology remained so relevant. What I could have appreciated a bit less of was the amount of “spice.” I understand that the two main characters share a complex history, and that their long-standing connection comes with a need to feel close – not just on an emotional level – but spending a bit less time on it would not have taken anything away from the story.

I did enjoy Rainer coming back, though I wanted to spend more time with him. I missed the snarky comments of his that I enjoyed so much in the first one. Overall, I enjoyed the conclusion of the book – though I did enjoy the first one a bit more.
