Audiobook You Can't Hurry Second Chances by Michelle Stimpson
Synopsis:

Newly divorced and determined to prove she can stand on her own, Joyce Hicks moves back to small-town Texas, leaving behind the life she has known for decades for a fresh start in her late father’s home. Unfinished renovations force her to share her kitchen with her tenant, Gabriella Santos, an aspiring chef with dreams of opening a restaurant inspired by her Black and Mexican roots. What begins as an inconvenience blossoms into an unlikely friendship between the two women as they learn to navigate their shared space.

Just as her life begins to settle, Joyce’s summer plans upend when her grandson, Elijah, is dropped off for an unexpected seven-week stay, dredging up all kinds of buried things from her past—including visits from her ex-husband, judgment from her daughter, and insecurities that she never quite healed from. Meanwhile, Gabriella’s passion for cooking and her vibrant personality infuse the household with energy, even as she faces her own struggles with self-doubt and heartbreak.

Together, Joyce, Gabriella, and Elijah form a patchwork family that supports each other through life’s highs and lows. When an old flame, Richard, reappears in Joyce’s life, she must decide whether to embrace love head-on or to slow down and wait just a little longer for her happy ending.

Review:

We meet Joyce, who has simply had enough of being stuck in her marriage after 30 years – only to realise she’s essentially been looking after yet another child (her husband). Her frustration, paired with the excitement of starting a new chapter in her life, comes across brilliantly. The narrator did an amazing job of bringing her to life and made it even easier to connect with her emotionally.

Now starting over, Joyce has to adapt to life in a small town, sharing her space with a younger tenant and dealing with some very noisy locals -along with Richard, who seems quite taken with her. As she tries to find her footing, her daughter adds another layer of tension by judging her for choosing herself and disrupting the life she was used to. The expectation that Joyce should continue to prioritise everyone else – especially being relied on as a constant babysitter – was frustrating to witness. It was difficult not to feel for Joyce in these moments. She’s a grown woman making her own choices, and choosing herself should never be something she’s blamed for.

However, Joyce quickly realises that starting over isn’t as easy as she’d hoped. Building new friendships, navigating a completely different environment, and being seen as someone who needs help simply because she’s “older” (rather than because she asked for it) all add realistic layers to her journey. These moments make the story feel raw, honest, and relatable.
Sometimes you come across a book that feels like a warm hug, and this is definitely one of them. It restores a sense of hope in humanity, showing that people can still support each other regardless of age, background, religion, or anything else. It might sound a bit dramatic, but that’s exactly what I took from it: hope. The reminder that putting yourself first might not always earn applause, but being your own cheerleader matters most – even if it takes time to get there.
This is a story that will stay with me, and experiencing it as an audiobook only elevated it further. Absolutely worth every minute.
