Review Talking to the Wolf by Rebecca Chace
Synopsis:

Talking to the Wolf is a poignant and haunting exploration of female friendship that unearths the past and the ghosts we carry into the present.

Four women. Thirty-five years. A lyrical and unsettling look at female friendship across time.

A failed rockstar, an awarded scientist, a work-obsessed misanthrope, and a ghost, whose untimely death ruptured the once-solid quartet, steel themselves for their thirty-fifth high school reunion dinner. Set during a surprise snowstorm in New York City the day of the reunion, Talking to the Wolf is a lyrical exploration of female friendship, friend breakups, and reconciliations across decades.

Review:

The premise of the story sounded interesting and immediately drew me in. I appreciated having women at the centre of the narrative. Each bringing their own life experiences, whether good or bad – facing their own unique challenges. Themes of heartbreak, motherhood, and the struggle to find one’s footing in life were explored in a relatable way.

The story is told through four different POVs. Three of them are still alive, while one…is not, yet continues to provide context and perspective. All of them have known each other for a long time and once shared a very close bond. This history came across clearly, and I also got the sense that after losing one of them, they drifted apart a little bit. There’s a subtle distance between them now, which creates cracks in their relationships. These cracks might seem easy to fix, but they highlight something very real. No one is perfect, and sometimes we struggle to deal with things on our own.
That said, the storytelling felt a little uneven at times. It’s also not the kind of book that ties everything together in a neat, satisfying ending. While it won’t become one of my favourites, I can still appreciate it for what it is and what it was trying to achieve.
