Synopsis:
Eden Mercer, a determined young officer in the fog-shrouded, tight-knit town of Nightfall, Oregon, is haunted by her past in a fundamentalist cult. With her loyal K-9 partner, Shadow, by her side, she’s eager to prove herself in a department dominated by machismo.
When a couple stumbles upon a woman’s body in a ritualistic burial deep within the dense, misty forests, Eden is thrust into a chilling mystery. As she delves deeper, disturbing clues and unsettling secrets tied to a local cult emerge. The stakes escalate with the approach of an ominous lunar eclipse—a celestial event the cult views as a harbinger of dark rituals.
The discovery of a missing boy connected to the case raises the tension to a fever pitch, as Eden realises he could be the next victim. Failure means more than letting a murderer walk free; it could cost an innocent child his life and shatter Eden’s belief in her ability to protect and serve.

Review:
We meet Eden, who grew up in a cult and managed to escape with her sister, leaving the rest of their family behind. Now she works for the police in a small town, but people don’t let her forget where she came from. Her past is always brought up, as if that alone makes her less capable. You can really feel her frustration – it’s unfair and tiring, and it made me connect with her straight away. Despite all of that, Eden proves again and again that she’s good at her job. She’s sharp, determined, and honestly better than many of her male colleagues. It’s easy to like her and root for her.
There’s also a second storyline about a young mother who grew up with very strict, distant parents. She’s always wanted to feel loved and accepted. When she, her son, and her friend join a cult that promises a better life, it feels like a chance for something more. But while her friend seems happy there, she never really feels at home. There’s always a sense that something isn’t right, and that the promises she was given are mostly empty.
The two storylines come together when a couple finds a dead body in the woods, pulling both worlds into the same mystery.
Eden really stands out as a character. Her past gives her a different way of seeing things, and that adds something fresh to the story. She doesn’t give up, even when people doubt her, and that stubbornness drives the investigation forward. The shifts between timelines are easy to follow and help you understand what’s going on and why it matters.
This ended up being a really enjoyable read. I found it through the audiobook, and I’m so glad I did. It feels like the start of a strong new series, and I’m already looking forward to what comes next. I’m definitely a fan of Eden.
