Review: Weekend Getaway by Brian R. O’Rourke

Synopsis:

Sarah Thompson is a survivor. Still recovering from a horrifying assault, where a man wearing a ski mask put a knife to her throat, Sarah is looking forward to a relaxing weekend with her husband, Alex.

And Alex has a surprise for her. Their new vacation home, a luxurious cabin in the Pocono Mountains near where Alex grew up, is finally finished and he has special plans for them. Sarah is overjoyed, thinking a weekend away will help her heal.

But while they’re packing, Sarah discovers that not one, but two, women from Alex’s childhood past have recently gone missing.

As they make their way to the remote area where their cabin is, Alex acts more and more strangely, and Sarah can’t help but start to wonder.

And then the detective contacts Alex. By the time the police interview is over, Sarah has learned that Alex has been keeping things from her, and he doesn’t have strong alibis for the crucial times in question.

Absolutely torn, wanting to believe Alex is the good man she always thought he was, but ravaged by doubts, Sarah finds herself at the cabin alone with this mystery of a person. There is no internet or wi-fi. No neighbors nearby.

Beginning to suspect Alex might be a killer, Sarah wonders how this man–this seemingly perfect man–could be a monster in disguise. And how she can safely get away from him.

Review:

The premise of the book sounded interesting. Sarah was attacked a few months ago and is still dealing with the aftermath. Her husband is trying his best to adapt to the situation and be by her side as she copes with PTSD and its impact on her life.
When he suggests taking her on a weekend trip to a getaway property they bought, it seems like a good idea to spend some time away. However, the journey there already foreshadows that it might have been a very bad idea.

Hmm, I don’t know exactly how I feel about it. It wasn’t bad, but it also didn’t grab my attention in the way I had hoped. The chapters, with their timestamps and everything happening between Friday evening and midnight, made the timeline feel very compressed.
We had to:

learn about Sarah’s past and her trauma
follow the cases of women going missing who had a connection to her husband
see the stress of his job and the challenges he faces at work
and experience all of this during the journey to the cabin

I felt overwhelmed – not in a way that made the story hard to follow – but in a way that made it feel too cramped for me to connect with it. I also felt more annoyed with the couple than invested in finding out what was really going on. Halfway through, I even debated whether I wanted to finish the book.
Maybe it’s the writing style or the way the story is presented, but it felt like an okay book to me—nothing more, nothing less. And sometimes that is perfectly fine.
