Synopsis:
Zylah Renfall is certain of two things: she will forever be on the run for the murder of a prince, and she somehow used magic to escape her own hanging.
Aided by a mysterious and infuriating Fae, Zylah dreams of a fresh start and a chance to explore her newly discovered Fae heritage. But her dreams are short-lived as the king’s men still hunt for her head. When she learns of a Fae uprising uniting to overthrow the same king who wants her dead, Zylah seizes her opportunity.
Take down the king, secure her freedom.
With just three months to prepare, Zylah’s future hangs in the balance. Despite the allure of her Fae trainer and the ruthless attempts on their lives, failure is not an option. For as long as the king lives, the Fae remain in the shadows and Zylah will never be free.

Review:
Zylah is hunted for murder – a crime that has her fighting for her life and shapes the rest of it. When fleeing the scene of her punishment, she ends up in an unexpected place and situation, where she meets Holt, a Fae who takes her in and introduces her to a world she was not aware of and had only read about in books. When she learns she is part of them, she not only finds a new home, but also a new purpose in life.
The world-building was not overly complex, but it provided enough background to get me interested in learning more about the world. I quickly understood who our main players were and that there are opposing sides with different goals – a peaceful solution not being a possibility.
What I enjoyed most about the story was the friendship between Zylah and Holt, which felt like it was constantly simmering, but never fully developing into more (yet). She makes friends, becomes integrated into the Fae groups, and slowly learns about the past. She also meets a very attractive Fae who falls for her.
The first book feels more like a setup for what’s to come. Zylah and Holt were the highlight for me. Their interactions, while never taking centre stage, felt genuine and came across the page very well. The romance was not my personal favourite (I simply had a different MMC in mind 🙂 ), but I didn’t mind it either. Overall, a solid start to the series.
