Synopsis:
Only a few people call me Lilith. That name comes with a specific meaning, and I hate it. So when my uncle used it, I knew the life I wanted was over. Now I’m stuck in a small town in the middle of New Mexico with one job I hate but am good at, and another job I love but ain’t very good at. It’s odd though. Just when you find yourself in the life you never wanted, that’s when you find exactly what you’ve been looking for.
Lilith Sadie Tolson never wanted the job that she was good at. Keeping secrets wasn’t in her plans. But now that she’s in the small town, working in the local bar, and falling in love with the bar’s owner; well, things aren’t looking too bad. At least until the secrets she’s keeping are starting to get bigger and harder to hide. Can she keep the man she loves and still keep the secrets that she’s been hiding?

Review:
When a family member calls and tells you that “it’s time,” it usually means one of two things: a death in the family or an obligation you can’t escape. When Lilith receives such a call, she’s not particularly happy about it – but she can’t say no either. Most of us wouldn’t be thrilled about having our lives abruptly put on hold.
When we meet her again, she’s working at a bar in a small town, just getting by. It’s not the life she wanted, but she’s accepted her circumstances. I was curious to learn what that call was really about, and while it took some time before things became clear, the truth was definitely not what I expected. Still, once it was revealed, I was immediately on board. The slow buildup kept the suspense going while giving me space to get to know Lilith better, along with the environment and people she’s become part of over the past month.
Things take a turn when a new man enters her life – who also happens to become her boss. From there, everything starts to get complicated and messy.
This is a novella, so it’s a quick read, and within that format the author did a great job keeping me engaged. Small details are revealed along the way, gradually adding context, until the full picture finally comes together at the end.
