Review The Serapin's Kiss by Coleman Alexander
Synopsis:

The Serapin’s Kiss is a lyrical dark fantasy about exile, survival, and the quiet rebellion of a graceless girl who refuses to disappear.

I was born to sing—not for this bloody work. Not for swords and bows, muddy paths and cold bowers.
My mother was the High Siren. I was meant to follow in her song.
Now, I have only silence. Silence—and the growing fear of what comes next. Goblins and sprites take us.

And yet… there is a grace, hidden among the outcasts. A grace brighter than all the lantern bulbs of the valley. A star in our midst.
That is good. Because all I see is darkness. And I must follow the light.

I am Aylia, daughter of the High Siren, of the line of Aeleph, first of the elves.
And this is my song.

Review:

I hardly know where to begin with this one. It is not a gentle or comforting story, and if you expect a cozy tale about a heroine trying to find herself after her mother’s rejection, you will be disappointed. This book deals with several heavy themes: being raised for a single purpose only to be cast out, being treated as inferior and bullied, suffering assault by someone once trusted, and being left alone to carry the emotional damage that follows.

The weight of trauma is present throughout, and the story takes its time unfolding. Even with its slow pace, there were moments where I wished for more depth. Some characters are well developed, while others remain flat, their actions never fully explained. The sense of isolation – feeling alone even when surrounded by others – and the hope for a better future come through clearly in the FMC. I wanted to wrap her in a hug more than once.

What we get is a story that translates very real, everyday struggles into a fantasy world. The ending is not fully satisfying, but it lays the groundwork for what readers might hope to see in the future. Despite a few pacing issues, the narrative kept my attention and left me invested in where the characters might go next.
