Review:

We meet Saskia, who lost her parents and joins her aunt and cousin on their journey aboard the Batavia. She is someone who is always looking out for others, and this character trait made her an instantly likeable character for me. Her POV was the one I enjoyed the most.
Aris is another POV we get, as the ship’s taciturn assistant surgeon. When he and Saskia initially meet, neither of them knows how much their lives will become intertwined going forward.
Our third POV comes from Tess, who is looking for answers about her past and embarks on a journey to learn more about what happened and how it is connected to her.

Upon arrival, it becomes clear very quickly that it won’t be an easy journey (past and present). The difference in treatment between the wealthy and the poor on the ship (and the interactions in general) was something that made me very uncomfortable and came across very well.
When the journey of the Batavia takes a gruesome turn, the story becomes one of survival and what some people are willing to do to make it through. The findings at the wreck site and the dark truths uncovered tell a deeply disturbing story.

With the story being told across two different timelines, it provides a unique way of connecting the dots between the past, the events leading up to the tragedy, and the story being told many years later. Knowing that this is based on actual historical events made me connect with it even more and turned it into an emotional journey of both loss and hope. Listening to this as an audience added another level or feeling connected to the story and made it even more special.
