Review: Secrets and Starlight by Mel Braxton

Review:

While I enjoyed the first instalment in the series, this one felt much more evenly paced and overall more cohesive, which I appreciated a lot.
We ended the last book with Ayla learning about her powers, but she never got the chance to learn how to control them when she was younger. As a result, she now struggles with controlling them.
She joins Zayne on a mission to recover something that could finally help lift the curse on his homeland. However, the mission turns out to be far more dangerous than either of them initially expected.

The premise is rather simple, but the execution was done well. What starts out as a mission to steal something, involving sneaking into a party, searching for an object, and trying to remain undetected, quickly turns into something of a heist, and I was completely on board for it.
In between, we get moments of Ayla and Zayne building upon their initial connection, and this time it felt believable to me. I especially liked Ayla’s hesitation in trusting their connection and questioning whether the physical attraction was genuine. The supporting cast also added some depth to the main characters and their pasts, although we didn’t explore them in great detail.

When everything finally came together, it ended with a bang and set the stage for the final book. Compared to the previous instalment, I enjoyed this one a lot more and am looking forward to the next one.
