Review:

I had high hopes for this one. After finishing the book, I can say that I wasn’t fully convinced.
We get two different timelines in this book: one looking back 15 years to when Lily was younger, and one from today’s perspective.
Lily was sent by her stepmother to a boarding school to get rid of her after the death of her father. We learn early on that she is not your typical teenager, and some of her past experiences and things she shares raised a few alarm bells for me. When she makes a new friend at school, it becomes clear that these two feel like broken souls coming together. They are both outsiders, and there is a lot of bullying going on, and a teacher who is a bit too friendly.

In today’s timeline, Lily goes on a weekend trip with some friends. Her ex turns out to be a stalker, and she is looking forward to getting away from him for a few days. Upon arriving at their destination, it quickly becomes clear that it won’t turn out to be the trip she was looking forward to.

Some of the twists felt interesting, and I did not see them coming. Others felt as though they were included simply for shock value, and I’m sad to say that I simply didn’t care about them. That took away from my reading experience. I felt like the story wanted to do too many things at once. I was constantly asking myself whether this was a story about someone seeking revenge after being bullied at school, or about a secret coming to light and someone seeking revenge because of it. Maybe that’s a me problem, but it didn’t feel fully cohesive to me.
It was a fast and easy read. I simply didn’t connect with it as much as I wanted to.
