Synopsis:
When K-9 Officer Eden Mercer enrolls in an elite search and rescue training course in remote Juniper Wells, Arizona, she has a hidden agenda. Her estranged father has finally offered a chance to reunite with her dying mother—if Eden agrees to meet his cult’s representatives alone at the Utah border. But when a former military K-9 handler is murdered before he can expose dangerous secrets, Eden and her loyal shepherd Shadow find themselves entangled in a deadly conspiracy.
As more disturbing evidence emerges, Eden discovers that beneath the town’s rustic facade lies a web of deception and violence. Review:
After finishing this instalment, I felt like I was getting a bit more of why I fell in love with the series initially.
We have Eden and her K-9 leaving their hometown to attend a training seminar together. What was intended to be a week of getting to know other people and their dogs quickly takes a turn, and soon she finds herself searching for a murderer while putting her own life in danger. Eden is clearly very passionate and does not shy away from putting herself in harm’s way. Her trust in her K-9 was, once again, one of my highlights. The bond these two have is beautiful to see.
The training location also fits nicely with her responding to the email from her father and returning to the cult to get in contact with her remaining family members.
Obviously, this will not be easy for her, and it became clear that the concerns, doubts, and dangers of returning to a situation she escaped from are not something to look forward to. For her own peace of mind, however, it is something she has to do. The ending set me up for exactly that: being very concerned for Eden.
Another solid entry, which I had the pleasure of listening to as an audiobook. I really appreciate that the series is now being made available in this format and that the author is giving new readers (like me) the chance to enjoy it years later. I’ve become a fan of listening to thrillers, and this one was a perfect addition.
