Synopsis:

Some mysteries aren’t meant to stay buried.

Nineteen years ago, Dan Whitaker vanished on a wilderness hike—never knowing his wife was pregnant. Pressured to stop searching, Elise raised their daughter alone, always haunted by unanswered questions.

Drawn back into the orbit of Elise and Dan’s former boss—now a U.S. senator and presidential candidate—Elise begins to suspect the friendship that bound their families hides a darker purpose. Then, a book of Dan’s—one she buried in a drawer and swore never to touch again—turns up on her nightstand.

Someone has moved it. Someone wants her to see it. And someone knows Dan is alive. Some mysteries aren’t meant to stay buried.

To uncover what really happened, Elise must follow the trail she abandoned years ago—risking the life she built with her daughter to confront secrets powerful enough to destroy them both.

Review:

When I first started this series, I really liked the strong focus on family – how they struggled, supported each other, and ultimately grew stronger together.

This is the first book in the series that left me wanting more. It was fast-paced and entertaining, but it no longer felt quite the same as before. The story leaned much more into a mystery thriller, which changed the tone for me. The family bond was still there, and that remained my favourite part.
However, the rest did not fully work for me. I can believe that a writer or reporter has useful contacts and good investigative skills. But seeing her, along with her daughter and family, suddenly take on the role of spies – with all the knowledge and abilities that come with it – felt a bit unrealistic. I found myself quite sceptical at times.

There is still one more book in the series that I want to try. While I did not dislike this one, it just was not what I was looking for anymore.
