Synopsis:
In a kingdom where touch drains emotions for power, Emberline masks hers, but when she becomes the key to the Blessed’s magic, her broad-shouldered, irreverent guard could make her feel too much.
His touch would be her undoing.
With a single touch, the ruling Blessed could realize Emberline Arkova is immune to their magic. She’s determined to leave the kingdom in search of answers, because every day she remains is a risk.
But her uncle’s sudden disappearance upends her plans. Thrust into his role as jeweler, she’s gone from avoiding the Blessed to becoming the center of their world. Uniquely able to identify the gems required for their magic, she’s now their most precious resource.
To protect their prize, Hart, a broad-shouldered guard with particular irreverence, is assigned to keep Emberline safe. His motives may be murky at best, but he’s not as loyal to the king as a Blessed should be, and now, putting her trust in him is her best bet to escape without discovery.
Hart may be one of them, but he awakens long-restrained feelings within Emberline. She can’t fall for a Blessed; his touch would expose her secret. But as she unearths the mysteries of magic and politics in the isolated and restless kingdom, Emberline is faced with a choice: flee her fate and hide her feelings—or embrace it and unleash them.

Review:
Those known as the Blessed wear rings made from adamas, a rare crystal that glows as it absorbs emotion. Through touch, they draw emotions from local citizens and turn those feelings into magic. Then there is our FMC, Emberline – who is immune to this process. Her immunity makes her unique, but it also puts her in danger. If anyone were to discover the truth, her life would likely be over.
With the announcement of a new group of Blessed approaching, Emberline plans to flee. Instead, she’s caught and forced to step into her uncle’s former role when he suddenly goes missing, taking over his responsibilities in his absence. She’s assigned a guard to protect her, which only complicates things further. Between searching for her uncle, looking after her family, and trying to escape the position she’s been trapped in, having someone constantly at her side is far from helpful.
As Emberline learns more about the guard’s connection to her uncle, a slow trust begins to form between them. When he helps her uncover pieces of her past, she realizes that her immunity comes with far more consequences than she ever expected.
The magic system introduces some fresh ideas, the connection between the two main characters feels believable – I was rooting for them – and the pacing allows the world to unfold naturally without becoming overwhelming. Overall, this was a well-done story. It wasn’t perfect, but it kept me entertained and eager to continue the series.
