Synopsis:

What if you saved a man’s life only to find out later that he’s a murderer?

Twelve years ago, a female soldier pulled her comrade from a burning vehicle. Now, she’s still left with both the physical and mental scars of her decision.

Aimee has always believed herself to be the jinx, blaming herself for the tragic events of what happened that day. Not everyone made it out of the explosion alive and in one
piece.

Violent flashbacks torment her relentlessly and force her to hide who she truly is.
Her trauma is even stopping her from progressing with her career and from ever taking the next step in another meaningful relationship.

When an old flame threatens to reignite in the form of Jones – the man she saved over a decade ago – she must face her troubled past again. But there’s a problem …

Jones is accused of murdering someone she once loved, and Aimee doesn’t know whoto trust – her heart or the evidence in front of her. With her friends by her side, Aimee sets out to discover whether Jones is indeed a killer or is being framed for a crime he didn’t commit.

But it’s not that simple, especially when simmering feelings start to burn hotter, and a member of her family is put in immediate danger.

Is Aimee the jinx in her own life, or is she finally going to break free from her hellish past and start living again?

Review:

This was a particularly intriguing one for me, unlike anything I’ve picked up before. It isn’t just a thriller; it blends several elements you wouldn’t expect to fit together, yet they come together remarkably well. In fact, the thriller aspect is probably the least dominant – something that surprisingly works in its favor.

Stories centered on female soldiers rarely take the spotlight, and witnessing the struggles and challenges faced by our main character is not easy. There were moments when I genuinely felt for her and had to give her credit for enduring an experience that clearly left lasting marks. Her past influences her daily life, making it hard for her to trust others or even herself as she tries to move forward. She chooses to keep these experiences private, not sharing them with strangers or even those close to her.

When her past resurfaces and begins to threaten the careful life she has built, she is forced to confront what happened and accept the consequences. The dual timelines enrich the story, helping us understand why the characters have become who they are today.

I enjoyed this audiobook a great deal. The different points of view were delivered exceptionally well, giving each character space to share their perspective and unique experiences. It made the story more layered, more human, and ultimately more compelling.
