Review When the Dead Remember by Lelia A Piet
Synopsis:

When truth is lost to grief, memory becomes a weapon.

After the death of her mother, Juniper Walder is shattered. Her grief deepens when, on the day of the funeral, she discovers her husband in bed with another woman. With her life unraveling, Juniper leans on her daughter, Roni, for support. But what begins as a fragile attempt to hold their family together soon takes a darker turn.

Juniper is losing time. Forgetting things. Slipping into moments that feel eerily familiar.
Someone is watching her.
Someone knows what she’s said.
What she’s done.
What she can’t remember.

Review:

This was an interesting one, and I mean that in the best way possible.

The beginning grabbed my attention immediately. I wanted to know what was happening, and the contrasting events promised a very compelling story. I’m usually not a fan of books that include the afterlife, and at first I didn’t understand why it was part of the narrative. But once I accepted it, the value it added became clearer and clearer.

The main story arc takes some time to show its full potential. Juniper has just lost her mother and discovered her husband cheating. Two traumatic events that make her struggles (especially the memory loss part) entirely understandable. Her daughter, who initially tries to support her, quickly becomes a character I grew to dislike. Her behavior made me want to shake her at times.

It took a bit of time to figure out where the story was going, but once the direction became clear, I couldn’t put it down. The ending was something I truly didn’t expect. There were a few moments that felt exaggerated or over the top, but overall this was a very enjoyable read.
