Review Tests Subjects by Don Fisher
Synopsis:

Welcome to this love story about focus groups, terrible products, and two broke people who really should have just gotten normal jobs. If you’re expecting a traditional romance novel, you know, the kind where attractive people meet randomly in a coffee shop, they have one meaningful conversation and immediately know they’re soulmates, you’re going to be very disappointed. This is not that type of book.

This is a book woman who eats ramen for dinner and names her car’s warning light.A man who teaches middle school science and drives a car nicknamed “The Blue Whale.”Their journey flows from “who is this person?” to “oh no, I have feelings” to “we’re engaged with a stolen Bluetooth ring.”It’s a slow burn. But like, a really slow burn. The kind where the match gets wet and you have to dry it out first and then find a good striking surface and maybe give up and just use a lighter instead.

What This Book A romantic comedy about two disasters finding each other.A satire about consumer culture and the gig economy.A true testament to the bonding power of shared suffering.Proof that love can start anywhere, even in Suite 407 of a depressing office building.

What This Book Is A guide to focus group testing (seriously, don’t use this as a manual) Financial advice (these people make horrible financial decisions)A How-To for healthy relationships (they figure it out eventually, but the journey is messy)Appropriate for people who hate sarcasm (honestly, it’s like 87% sarcasm) The love story is real, not Julia and Garrett specifically, they’re fictional, but the idea that people can meet in weird circumstances, bond over ridiculous things, and build something meaningful while testing terrible products for $75? That happens.

Final This is a book about finding love when you’re not looking for it. When you’re just trying to pay rent and survive and maybe test a few products along the way. It’s ridiculous. It’s messy, and it’s real!

Review:

I’m always a fan of a slow‑burn romance, and the author makes it clear from the start that this is exactly what we’re getting here.

Both main characters are coming out of difficult relationships, hurt, a little broken, and doing their best to stay afloat. From the moment they meet, there’s an undeniable spark. Their humor clicks effortlessly, and it’s obvious they’re aware of the connection, even if they’re both too scared to let it grow into something more. As they keep running into each other and getting thrown into situations that highlight their chemistry, ignoring it becomes impossible.

The writing style and structure are quite unique. The chapters are very short, the sentences rather short and mainly dialogue, and the focus stays largely on their interactions within the product‑testing settings, which were genuinely hilarious. I wouldn’t be surprised if real developers or companies out there come up with similarly strange ideas. The banter in the early chapters was especially fun, and each chapter followed a familiar rhythm. After a while, though, the repetition started to show, and I found myself wanting the back‑and‑forth to finally move forward.

The book definitely has its moments, funny scenes, a quirky format, and a concept that feels refreshingly different. If you’re in the mood for something light, playful, and a bit unconventional, this one is worth a try.
