Synopsis:

Three targets. Four days. Zero margin for error.

Kansas City. When a kind-hearted mechanic is attacked by mob enforcers, Kyle Payne steps in—inadvertently killing the son-in-law of crime boss Avi Russo.

Captured and fitted with a neural kill-chip that can be activated remotely, Payne is forced to become Russo’s personal assassin. He has four days to eliminate key members of a rival crime organization. If he fails, he dies.

As Payne navigates the lethal underworld of Kansas City, he realizes he’s stumbled into a tangled web of treachery and intrigue. A mysterious bounty hunter is circling. The Russian Bratva smells blood. And Russo’s own daughter is desperate to escape her father’s empire.

Payne can only see one way out. He will trigger an all-out war between the factions—and in the chaos, find a way to free himself from Russo’s control.

With enemies closing in from every side and the clock in his skull ticking down, Payne knows one thing for sure—he’s predator, not prey.

Review:

I’m really enjoying my current thriller phase, especially stories where the MMC is a true badass with a military or spy background. This book fit my preferences perfectly.

Even though this is the fifth book in the series and I haven’t read the previous ones, I appreciated that it works well as a standalone. There are a few brief references to past events, but they mainly help shape the MMC and add useful background without feeling confusing.

The overall plot isn’t groundbreaking, but it doesn’t need to be. A broken bike forces the MMC to stay in town for a few days, where he stumbles into a dangerous situation he has to fight his way out of. Along the way, he makes both allies and enemies. The story is told in a very engaging way, fast-paced, easy to visualize, and never boring. The added touch of sarcasm only makes the action more enjoyable.

If you’re a fan of this kind of thriller, you’ll have a good time with this one. I’ll definitely be checking out the rest of the series. Consider me officially interested in spending more time with this MMC.
