Review Over Her Dead Body by H.J. Garbett
Synopsis:

Ruth Watkins is pretending to be a serial killer…

Two years ago, Ruth was an ambitious journalist on the trail of a serial killer with a very specific calling card. Then her best friend became the latest victim, and Ruth’s life fell apart. When police shelve the case, Ruth decides there is only one way to force them to keep looking: make him kill again. Or at least, make it look like he has…

The good news: working at a funeral home has its perks, like access to fresh hearts she can use to stage convincing crime scenes.

The bad news: the real killer has noticed Ruth’s ‘work’ too, and now it’s not just the police trying to catch her…

A darkly hilarious thriller about grief, revenge, and the surprisingly thin line between solving a murder and creative corpse management. Perfect for fans of How to Kill Your Family and Listen for the Lie.

Review:

When I read the synopsis, I expected something quirky, funny, and entertaining, and thankfully, that’s exactly what I got.

There were definitely moments that felt a bit over the top, but at its core, this is a heartwarming story about losing a friend and refusing to give up on finding the person responsible. Did Ruth make a series of questionable choices? Absolutely. Did she cause the people around her to doubt her sanity for a moment? Also yes.

Some of the action sounded downright outrageous on paper, but it was incredibly fun to follow along. Beneath all the chaos is a character who feels lonely and guilty, and who refuses to stop searching even when almost everyone tells her to let go. Her intentions were good—her execution, less so. While the story lost me in a few places, the ending made up for it.

If you enjoy books that are a bit weird, a bit exaggerated, and filled with flawed but lovable characters, this one will definitely be your kind of read.
