Synopsis:

Condemned as a witch, sentenced to die, Alys Tanner uses her innate magical power to flee Puritanical New England. Stealing a ship, Alys becomes captain of The Sea Witch, leading its all-female, sorcery-wielding pirate crew. But the colonial British navy is in hot pursuit. The navy fights for a choke hold on the Caribbean and will destroy anything they cannot control, especially witches.

When Ben Priestley, a headstrong naval navigator, is inadvertently captured by the lady pirates, dangerous truths are revealed. A quest that could turn the tides against the navy’s might ignites a reluctant partnership between the by-the-books prisoner and the fierce witch pirate captain. While they brave backstabbing pirates, perilous tropical islands and monster-filled seas, Alys and Ben’s mistrust grows into unexpected desire as they battle an enemy that will stop at nothing to rule the waves.

Review:

The story opens with Alys fleeing for her life, hunted for the crime of being a witch. In this world, women with power are condemned and killed, while men with the same abilities are treated very differently.

A year later, Alys commands The Sea Witch, a ship that offers refuge to women like her. I loved the bond these women have forged, learning to harness their powers, surviving harsh seas, and carving out a place for themselves in a world that wants them gone. Their journey comest with challenges, and finding their way is no easy feat.

When they capture Ben, everything changes. His presence sparks tension and curiosity as he begins to question what he’s been taught and slowly earns the crew’s trust. Through this, he discovers truths about the women, and about himself, that he never expected.

The tale delivers battles, a treasure hunt, and a voyage filled with danger and discovery. While I enjoyed the strong sense of camaraderie, I wished for deeper character backstories and more exploration of their struggles. Some conflicts felt resolved too easily, leaving parts of the narrative lacking in depth. It’s not a series I see the need to continue for now.

If you’re looking for a pirate adventure with witches, magic, and a fierce sisterhood, this might be the book for you.
