Review:

I enjoyed the first book in the series, didn’t love it, but liked it enough to want to see how the story would unfold in the next installment.

What initially drew me in was Meilin’s struggle. The way she tried to resist being reduced to fulfilling her duty as a woman added depth and tension, especially because it clashed so strongly with how she wanted to be seen. But as the second book progressed, I felt increasingly disconnected from her journey. The story jumped quickly from one problem to the next without giving key moments room to breathe. I understand the urgency within the plot, but by the halfway point, I was debating whether I even wanted to finish. I found myself bored, partly because so many characters appeared out of nowhere, and partly because I simply couldn’t keep track of them. The larger mission to unite everyone and fight for a shared cause started to feel unfocused and, ultimately, less cohesive.

The series had a lot of potential, and I appreciate that it isn’t just another retelling with a predictable happy ending. But for me, the execution fell short.
