Review Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross

This is the first book in the Duology. Reading the Prequel is not necessary, but will add context to the magic system and the story.

Synopsis:

After centuries of sleep, the gods are warring again…

All eighteen-year-old Iris Winnow wants to do is hold her family together. With a brother on the frontline forced to fight on behalf of the Gods now missing from the frontline and a mother drowning her sorrows, Iris’s best bet is winning the columnist promotion at the Oath Gazette.

But when Iris’s letters to her brother fall into the wrong hands – that of the handsome but cold Roman Kitt, her rival at the paper – an unlikely magical connection forms.

Expelled into the middle of a mystical war, magical typewriters in tow, can their bond withstand the fight for the fate of mankind and, most importantly, love?

An epic enemies-to-lovers fantasy novel filled with hope and heartbreak, and the unparalleled power of love.

Review:

I’ve now read this book for the second time, and I’m relieved to say that I still enjoyed it, though not quite as much as the first time.

This is a love story that unfolds slowly and gently. We meet Roman and Iris at work, where they are competing for the same position. Even though the connection between them isn’t obvious at first, there is a clear spark that goes beyond being colleagues. They come from very different worlds, yet both carry personal struggles that allow them to understand each other on a deeper level and build something meaningful.

When Iris leaves her old life behind and begins writing letters to a stranger through a wardrobe (never knowing who waits on the other side) Roman realises just how much she means to him, and he follows her. Their reunion isn’t simple, but the difficult circumstances finally give them the space to be honest with themselves and with each other.

The first book in the main duology focuses mostly on their romance, with the magic present but quietly in the background. Reading the prequel recently added some context, but it isn’t necessary to enjoy or understand the main story.
In the end, this book gave me a warm, tender look at two people finding each other. I felt connected to them, and I found myself rooting for them all over again.
