Synopsis:

Twenty-year-old Areya wakes in a jail cell with her mother’s blood on her hands—and no memory of how it got there.

Then he arrives.

Ash is a shadow made flesh. A weapon without a past, bound by a curse that erased every trace of who he once was.

He has one directive: deliver the girl to his king.

He’s never questioned an order. He’s never failed a mission.

He’s never wanted to.

Areya is shattered—hollowed by grief, broken by loss. But there’s something electric in the space between them. A pull that cracks the edges of Ash’s carefully controlled silence.

Then she learns the truth that breaks what’s left of her: he’s the reason her mother is dead.

Now hatred is all she has. It’s the only thing stronger than her grief. The only thing keeping her breathing. She has nothing left but the burning need to survive long enough to make him pay.

But as fragments of Ash’s stolen memories begin to surface, the line between enemy and ally begins to blur.

The man who destroyed her life might be the only one who can save it.

And the girl he was ordered to deliver might be the key to breaking them both free.

Some truths cut deeper than any blade—and some choices can’t be undone.

Review:

I had a certain expectation from reading the description and felt like I got something completely different. At this point I don not know if this is a good or bad thing. Consider me undeceive 🙂

The beginning of the book felt high paced and shortly after, it slowed down significantly, which made me consider continuing for a bit to be honest. It felt a bit like pressing pause and enjoying a nice vacation. I was waiting for something to happen, but it felt a bit too much like sunshine and rainbows. I’m glad I pushed through it with it picking up at the end and ending with a cliff-hanger.

What I enjoyed about the love story is that we don’t have to go though the overused (in my opinion) of the FMC and the MMC either not being honest with their feeling or having to overcome multiple hurdles first to become a couple. Early on, we knew these two were destined for each other. They knew it also. Did they go from I just met you to I want to spend my life with you in the span of a few weeks? Yes, and here and there it felt a bit rushed, but at the end I was on board with it.

The book left an impression on me. I’m struggling to put it in exact words (is a positive or more leaning negative, I just don’t know). It is different than what I usually get from books of this genre. I am interested to know what will happen after the cliff-hanger, but not enough to absolutely confirm me wanting to continue anytime soon. With it being part of Kindle Unlimited, the resistence point is for sure lower and increases the chances of me continuing the series.
