Synopsis:

Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.

Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name. I saw the movie a while ago and remember it leaving an impression. Years later I’m coming back to the original version of it.

Angie Thomas delivers a powerful story that exposes the brutal reality of systemic racism and a broken justice system.

This book doesn’t just tell Khalil’s story—it forces you to confront the countless real lives lost to injustice. It’s about what happens when marginalised communities demand basic human rights and how privilege, ignorance, and apathy is not a solution..

You don’t need “social experiments” to understand racism; you need to listen. This novel reminds us that no one should have to defend their humanity, yet many do—every single day.

The Hate U Give is a call to empathy, awareness, and action. The way the story is presented, it makes us all aware, that there is so much more to do. Where you grow up, where you come from, you don’t have a choice in that. That does not make you a more or lesser member of society. Sadly, there are enough people out there, that think different.

Was it perfect? No, but it brought an important message across and made me think and re-think what I know and gave me a better understanding of the issues presented in the book.
